Our Mission

To ensure the protection of human research subjects by conducting scientific and ethical review of research studies while providing leadership and education for the research community.

Scope of Authority for the DUHS IRB

The DUHS IRB is the IRB-of-Record for all DUHS employees and students who conduct research with human subjects, regardless of the location of that research.  It serves as the IRB for:

  • Duke University Hospital and Clinics
  • Duke University School of Medicine
  • Duke University School of Nursing
  • Duke Regional Hospital
  • Duke Raleigh Hospital
  • Duke University (biomedical)

IRBs

The DUHS IRB has oversight of ten convened IRBs, eight of which meet monthly, either via Zoom or in Erwin Square, on the first, second, third and fourth Wednesday and Thursday afternoons of the month.

Organization

The DUHS IRB office has 20 staff persons, including the Executive Director.  The IRB has 13 Chairs, most of whom are part-time.  The IRB members, almost 200 in total, are drawn from various disciplines across DUHS and from the surrounding Durham/Triangle community.
